Problem

Two uniform smooth spheres, AA and BB, of equal radii are on a horizontal surface. They have masses of mm and kmkm respectively. Sphere AA is moving with speed uu at an angle α\alpha with the line of centres when it collides with sphere BB which is stationary. Immediately after the collision, sphere AA moves with speed vv at an angle 2α2\alpha with the line of centres (see diagram).

It is given that tanα=34\tan\alpha=\frac34.

(a) Find vv in terms of uu.

(b) Find the coefficient of restitution between the spheres in terms of kk.

(c) Find the range of possible values of kk.
