Problem

AA and BB are two fixed points at a distance 22a22a apart, with BB vertically below AA. A light elastic string of natural length 4a4a and modulus of elasticity 5mg5mg has one end attached to AA and the other end attached to a particle PP of mass kmkm. Another light elastic string of natural length 8a8a and modulus of elasticity 6mg6mg has one end attached to BB and the other end attached to PP. Particle PP is vertically above BB.

(a) Show that, when the system is in equilibrium,

BP=57a2ak4.BP=\frac{57a-2ak}{4}.

The particle PP is pulled vertically upwards so that BP=18aBP=18a, and is then released from rest. In its subsequent motion, PP first comes to instantaneous rest at the point where BP=8aBP=8a.

(b) Find the value of kk.
