Problem

XX and YY are two fixed smooth vertical walls on a smooth horizontal surface. The walls are parallel and at a distance dd apart. The points P1P_1, P2P_2 and P3P_3 all lie on the surface.

A particle QQ is projected horizontally from the point P1P_1 on Wall XX with speed uu, and moves along the surface. The particle QQ strikes Wall YY at the point P2P_2. Immediately before the collision, the direction of motion of QQ makes an angle α\alpha with Wall YY, where sinα=15\sin\alpha=\frac15. Immediately after the collision, the direction of motion of QQ makes an angle θ\theta with Wall YY. The particle QQ then strikes Wall XX at the point P3P_3 (see diagram).

The time that it takes QQ to travel the distance P1P2P_1P_2 is TT. The time that it takes QQ to travel the distance P2P3P_2P_3 is kTkT.

Find, in terms of kk, the coefficient of restitution between QQ and Wall YY.
